James Gordon Sheehy, a respected Navy veteran and accomplished aerospace engineer, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 84. He was surrounded by family in his home in Redondo Beach, California. Known for his unwavering dedication to family, service, and community, Jim leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.
Born on March 9, 1941, in Windsor, New York, to James Edward Sheehy and Shirley Baldwin Sheehy, Jim was the youngest of eight siblings. He is survived by his wife, Alexis, with whom he shared sixty years of marriage, their children, James and Shannon, his grandson, Matthew, and his brother, Dennis. He was preceded in death by six siblings.
A Distinguished Military and Engineering Career
Jim served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1966, achieving the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician. His naval service included assignments aboard several vessels, such as the USS Lawrence, USS Chicago, USS Ramsey, USS Columbus, and USS Talbot. His military experience instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and pride.
Following his service, Jim embarked on a notable career in aerospace engineering. He contributed to significant projects at prominent organizations, including Burroughs Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Honeywell, and Northrop. His work was integral to the development of the Viking Mars spacecraft and the MX ICBM Missile programs, showcasing his technical expertise and commitment to advancing space exploration and national defense.
A Life of Service and Adventure
Jim’s commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. He was an active member of Rotary International for sixteen years, where he embraced the organization’s dedication to community service. Additionally, he was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, celebrating 38 years of sobriety in September 2025, exemplifying the principles of Recovery, Unity, and Service that he lived by.
Travel was another passion for Jim. He and Alexis explored all seven continents, visiting 103 countries and more than 500 cities. Despite facing health challenges, including a serious back condition that developed in 2012, Jim remained determined to lead an active life. He adapted by using a walker, later upgrading to a “sport walker” that enabled him to participate in the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon and complete five additional marathons.
Jim Sheehy will be remembered for his intelligence, perseverance, and generosity of spirit. His life was a testament to the values of dedication, adventure, and love. As family and friends reflect on his journey, they remember a man who lived fully, traveled widely, served honorably, and loved deeply. He will be missed profoundly by all who knew him.
