Meta Halts Teen Access to AI Characters Amid Safety Concerns

Meta has announced that it will restrict access to its AI characters for teenagers, a move that reflects growing concerns over the impact of such technology on young users. The decision, made public on October 27, 2023, comes as the company seeks to develop improved versions of its AI interactions, particularly in light of potential mental health risks associated with chatbot engagement.

In a recent blog post, Meta stated, “Starting in the coming weeks, teens will no longer be able to access AI characters across our apps until the updated experience is ready.” This restriction will affect all users who have registered with a birthday indicating they are teenagers, as well as those whose age is predicted to be under 18 based on the company’s age assessment technology.

This announcement follows Meta’s previous commitment made in October to implement parental oversight tools for monitoring children’s interactions with AI. These tools were intended to allow parents to restrict access to AI characters and gain insights into their children’s conversations. While Meta initially aimed to release these features early in 2023, the current pause on teen access indicates a significant shift in strategy, with the company now focusing on building a “new version” of its AI characters.

Concerns surrounding the use of AI chatbots by teenagers have intensified discussions about AI safety, particularly regarding what some experts term “AI psychosis.” This phenomenon refers to harmful mental health outcomes that may result from the overly accommodating responses of AI systems. Alarmingly, there have been reported cases where young users have experienced severe emotional distress, with some instances leading to tragic outcomes, including suicide.

Surveys reveal that AI chatbots are increasingly popular among teenagers, with research indicating that one in five high school students in the United States has either engaged in or knows someone who has had a romantic relationship with an AI. This popularity is juxtaposed with serious ethical considerations, especially given that internal documents have shown Meta allowing underage users to engage in inappropriate conversations with AI, including discussions deemed “sensual.”

Meta is not alone in facing scrutiny over AI interactions with minors. Character.AI, a platform offering similar AI companions, imposed a ban on minors in October 2023 after facing lawsuits from families claiming the chatbots encouraged self-harm among children. Such legal actions highlight the growing pressure on tech companies to ensure the safety of young users.

As Meta works to enhance its AI offerings, the decision to temporarily suspend teen access underscores the delicate balance between innovation and responsibility in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. The forthcoming updates aim not only to improve user experience but also to safeguard the well-being of the most vulnerable users.
