InterDigital Inc. has officially launched a Haptic Excellence Center in partnership with Razer, aiming to spearhead research, development, and education in haptic technology. Located in Wilmington, Delaware, this initiative seeks to enhance innovations that integrate tactile feedback with audio and visual media, fundamentally transforming user experiences in consumer devices.
The Haptic Excellence Center will focus on creating a comprehensive haptic streaming platform designed to enable the creation, encoding, synchronization, and delivery of haptic data in conjunction with audio and video content. This effort is supported by data from a white paper produced by Futuresource and InterDigital, which indicates that approximately 4.1 billion consumer devices were equipped with haptic technology by the end of 2024. Projections suggest that by 2028, around 53% of consumer devices will be haptic-enabled.
Goals and Collaborations
As part of its mission, the Haptic Excellence Center aims to foster collaboration between industry leaders and academic institutions. Rajesh Pankaj, the Chief Technology Officer at InterDigital, highlighted that the center is designed to promote experimentation and deepen understanding of haptic technologies. This partnership with universities will not only advance research but also enhance education related to haptic systems and their applications in various fields.
Eric Vezzoli, Director of Technology at Razer, emphasized that the collaboration intends to develop an open haptics framework. This initiative aims to facilitate broader deployment of haptic technology across various consumer devices, enriching how users interact with digital content.
InterDigital, a leader in wireless and video technologies, continues to pave the way for advancements in consumer technology. The establishment of this center marks a significant step forward in the integration of haptic feedback, which is expected to redefine media experiences for consumers globally.
