Farmworker Dies Following Fall During ICE Raid in California

A tragic incident unfolded during an immigration enforcement operation in California when a farmworker, Jaime Alanis, fell from a greenhouse roof and later succumbed to his injuries. The 57-year-old, who had been the primary provider for his family in Mexico, died on March 30, 2024. His niece, Yesenia Duran, confirmed the news to the Associated Press, stating that Alanis had worked at the cannabis facility for a decade.

The circumstances surrounding Alanis’ death highlight the chaotic nature of the raid conducted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at Glass House Farms, which operates in both Camarillo and Carpinteria. Reports indicate that during the operation on March 28, 2024, agents executed criminal search warrants, leading to the arrest of around 200 individuals suspected of being in the country illegally.

Family sources revealed that Alanis had called his family to inform them he was hiding from agents before he fell approximately 30 feet from the roof, resulting in a broken neck. The union representing farmworkers, the United Farm Workers (UFW), expressed outrage over the incident, stating, “These violent and cruel federal actions terrorize American communities, disrupt the American food supply chain, threaten lives and separate families.” Although the UFW does not represent workers at the facility, their statement reflects widespread concern about the implications of such enforcement actions.

Initially, the UFW reported Alanis’ death prematurely, stating he had already passed away, but the Ventura County Medical Center later clarified that he was still on life support at that time. The DHS confirmed that Alanis was not in their custody when he fell, stating, “This man was not in and has not been in CBP or ICE custody.” According to Tricia McLaughlin, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, although Alanis was not being pursued, he climbed onto the greenhouse roof and fell.

The raid drew significant public attention as crowds gathered outside the Glass House facility, seeking information about their relatives and protesting against immigration enforcement. Tensions escalated as agents, dressed in military-style uniforms, confronted demonstrators. Reports of gunfire directed at federal agents surfaced, prompting authorities to offer a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

In a statement following the incident, Glass House Farms confirmed that immigration agents had valid warrants and stated that they were providing legal representation for detained workers. They emphasized that the company has never knowingly violated hiring practices and does not employ minors.

The incident has sparked renewed discussions regarding immigration enforcement practices in the United States, particularly under the Trump administration. As communities grapple with the impact of such federal actions, the consequences for families and workers continue to unfold.
