David E. Brest, a respected biologist and dedicated family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 85, surrounded by his beloved wife, Patricia Brest. His death marks the end of a life rich in family memories and academic contributions, particularly in the field of biology.
Born in San Gabriel, California, David was the youngest of three boys. His love for nature blossomed during childhood camping trips with his family, particularly with his twin brother, Dennis Brest. This early connection to the outdoors inspired David’s academic pursuits; he studied Forestry at the University of Oregon before earning a PhD in Biology from UCLA. This educational journey ignited a friendly rivalry with his brother, who supported the University of Southern California.
David dedicated 35 years of his career to teaching at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he influenced countless students until his retirement in 2003. Known for his engaging lectures, he had a unique ability to make complex topics, such as photosynthesis, both entertaining and educational. His family often joked that his lectures could serve as either punishment or reward, showcasing his sense of humor.
Legacy and Family Life
David and Patricia met while working at CSUDH, where their shared interests and mutual respect blossomed into love. They married in June 1987, enjoying a partnership defined by support and laughter. David was a dedicated family man, nurturing relationships with both his human and animal family members. His calm demeanor and problem-solving skills were evident in everyday family activities, from tackling challenging sudoku puzzles to navigating difficult conversations.
David’s passion for the outdoors created cherished memories, particularly family camping trips to locations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, and Sequoia National Park. In honoring his memory, his ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove beside the meadow where he and Patricia exchanged vows.
David is survived by his wife, Patricia Brest (née McElroy), along with stepchildren Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst. He also leaves behind grandchildren Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, Casey and Jay Pabst, as well as nieces and nephews, including Carol (James) Brest Hare and Brian (Lonni) Brest, among others.
