Julia Ann Chlanda, a respected member of the Torrance community, passed away on August 25, 2025, at the age of 68. A lifelong resident of Torrance, California, she dedicated her life to public service and her family, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew her.
Born and raised in Torrance, Julia graduated from Torrance High School in 1975. She pursued higher education at Loyola Marymount University, earning a bachelor’s degree in history in 1979. Julia devoted the next 37 years of her career to the California Court of Appeal in Los Angeles, where she worked as a Deputy Clerk.
Active Community Member and Lifelong Learner
Julia was an active member of the Torrance First United Methodist Church throughout her life. As a young woman, she participated in the youth group and choir, later returning to give back to the community as a Sunday School teacher. Her commitment to the church exemplified her dedication to nurturing the next generation.
A lover of the performing arts, Julia shared her passion for music, film, and literature with those around her. She fostered a creative spirit in her children, encouraging them to explore their interests. Julia was also known for her devotion to animals, reflecting her compassionate nature.
Above all, Julia was a proud mother. She raised her two children in the South Bay, providing unwavering support as they pursued their dreams. Her nurturing spirit and steadfast presence were the foundation of their lives.
Legacy of Love and Kindness
Julia is survived by her daughter, Samantha Chlanda, of Los Angeles; her son, Ryan Cody Chlanda, of Torrance; and her siblings, including Patricia Champlin Castillon of Murrieta and John Chlanda of Washington. She also leaves behind numerous relatives, including her partner, Kinji Inomata, and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Betty Champlin and Chauncey Champlin, along with her brother, Ted Chlanda. Julia’s kindness and dedication to her family will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
Memorial services will take place at 3 PM on September 27, 2025, at the Torrance First United Methodist Church. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Julia’s life and the profound impact she had on her community.
