John (Jack) Paul Brown, a cherished member of the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old. Born on March 10, 1933, in Long Beach, California, Jack’s life was marked by deep connections to his family, friends, and the local community.
Jack’s upbringing in San Pedro was filled with vibrant memories, including catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving at the port. He was one of the first employees at Helen Grace Chocolates and had a unique childhood experience as a Civilian Air Warden during World War II, assisting his father in ensuring community safety.
He attended Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and later St. Anthony’s High School, where he became an accomplished distance runner on the track team. Jack often reminisced about taking the ferry across the harbor to school before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge. His passion for sports continued into college, where he earned a degree in Drafting while maintaining his athletic pursuits.
After completing his education, Jack began his career at Northrop Grumman. He later ventured into entrepreneurship, launching his own business and providing opportunities for friends and colleagues he met along the way.
In 1969, Jack met his future wife, Rita Cebula, and they married on April 17, 1971. Together, they welcomed two children into their family: Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975. Rita dedicated 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity Church, where Jack and Rita actively participated in community events.
Jack was known for his love of family vacations and hobbies that included gardening, sports, DIY projects, and coin collecting. His unique sense of humor brought joy to those around him. Each morning began with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a keen interest in the stock market.
He is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, as well as his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent. Jack’s legacy continues through his sister, Agnes Welsh, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rita, his parents, Robert and Agnes, and his siblings, Robert and Phyllis Smith.
A funeral mass will take place on January 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church, followed by burial at Green Hills Memorial Park. Friends and family are encouraged to sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com to honor Jack’s memory.
