Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison, a cherished member of the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Claude K. Harrison, who died in 2018, and her brother Carl Antonovich, who passed away in 2024.
A Life of Art and Community Engagement
Affectionately known as Nene to family and friends, Arlene was a passionate environmental activist and a proud representative of her Croatian fishing heritage. Her family roots trace back to her father, Carl Antonovich, and grandfather, John Antonovich, who immigrated from Korcula, Croatia, in 1907. Throughout her life, Arlene remained deeply connected to her community, known for her artistic talents and culinary skills.
As a member of the San Pedro Art Association, she enjoyed painting landscapes en plein air from her oceanfront home. Her artistic eye extended to her cooking, where she became renowned for her Croatian seafood dishes, with hobotnica octopus salad being a favorite among guests. Arlene hosted countless dinner parties, gathering family and friends to share stories and laughter around the table.
Legacy and Family Connections
Arlene’s love for the ocean was evident in her dedication to teaching her four sons how to swim at Cabrillo Beach. This instilled a lifelong appreciation for the beach and ocean in them, as well as in their children and grandchildren. Summers spent on Catalina Island were filled with family traditions, creating lasting memories for generations.
Her home on Bluff Place became a beloved venue for family celebrations, including Fourth of July fireworks and Christmas Eve feasts. Arlene leaves behind a legacy that spans her immediate family, including her son Robb Heberer (Debbe), grandchildren Heidi (Chris) Linscomb, Megan Wescott, Molly (Matt) Dragich, Zack (Caitlin) Heberer, and their great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her other sons, Craig (Teresa) Heberer, Karl (Julie) Heberer, and Chris (Maria) Heberer, along with numerous grandchildren and extended family members in both San Pedro and Korcula.
A private Celebration of Life is being organized in accordance with her wishes for immediate family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, where her sons enjoyed many afternoons, and to the San Pedro Art Association, reflecting Arlene’s commitment to both youth and the arts.
