Apple has launched a public beta for its AirPods, marking the first time users can test upcoming features before the official release. Starting on July 24, 2025, owners of select AirPods models can access new functionalities associated with the upcoming iOS 26. This initiative allows users to explore features such as a camera remote control and enhanced studio audio quality, paving the way for improved audio experiences.
This public beta is particularly significant as it opens the doors for AirPods users to trial software updates that were previously exclusive to developers. Historically, since the debut of the first AirPods in 2016, firmware updates have been managed behind the scenes, with users receiving automatic updates without any opportunity for pre-release trials. In contrast, other Apple products like the iPhone and iPad have benefited from public beta programs for years.
Available only for the latest models, the beta firmware is compatible with the following AirPods: AirPods Pro 2 (Lightning), AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C), AirPods 4, and AirPods 4 (ANC). Most of the new features are designed to operate with the H2 chip, emphasizing the technological advancements within these devices.
Notable Features of the Beta Firmware
The beta version introduces several innovations that enhance user experience. One standout feature is the new studio audio quality, which aims to deliver voice recordings at a professional level, akin to that of a high-quality lavalier microphone. Utilizing advanced algorithms for noise suppression and sound optimization, these enhancements leverage Apple’s extensive experience in audio processing, which is evident in professional tools like Logic Pro.
Additionally, the voice quality for phone calls has seen improvements through enhanced voice insulation and optimized microphones, ensuring a more natural sound during conversations and video calls. These developments underscore Apple’s commitment to refining audio quality across its product range.
Another exciting addition is the camera remote control function, which allows users to take photos or start video recordings simply by pressing the AirPods stem while the camera app is active. The beta also includes an automatic pause feature that detects when a user falls asleep, pausing media playback until the user wakes.
A new option, “Keeping Audio with Headphones,” prevents the audio stream from automatically switching to the car’s system when a CarPlay connection is established. This functionality is particularly helpful for users who rely on AirPods as hearing aids.
Easy Access to Beta Software
Installing the beta firmware is straightforward, a significant change from the previous complex processes that developers faced. Users can activate the beta by toggling a switch in the AirPods settings. After connecting to an iOS or iPadOS device, Apple enables the beta updates through Bluetooth settings. The update will automatically install when the AirPods are in their charging case and connected to a compatible device running the public beta of iOS 26 or iPadOS 26.
Despite the accessibility, Apple cautions users about potential stability issues associated with beta software. Once installed, the beta firmware cannot be removed until a final version is released, which is standard practice for AirPods updates due to their inability to downgrade software.
The full launch of iOS 26 and the corresponding AirPods firmware is anticipated for September 2025, offering users a glimpse into the future of Apple’s audio technology.
