UCP San Diego Hosts 43rd Charity Golf Tournament to Support Communication

On March 15, 2024, the United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) organization in San Diego held its 43rd Charity Golf Tournament, raising funds to enhance communication for individuals with disabilities. The event brought together local businesses and community members, all united under a common cause: improving the lives of those affected by cerebral palsy.

Enhancing Communication for Individuals with Cerebral Palsy

Communication is a fundamental human right, and UCP is dedicated to ensuring that everyone has the means to express themselves. According to Arlin Sacristan, an AAC Program coordinator at UCP, “Our mission here at UCP is to ensure every family, every person we serve has a reliable way to communicate.” This is often achieved through Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, which play a crucial role for many individuals.

Across the globe, over 18 million people live with cerebral palsy, with more than 7,000 individuals residing in San Diego County alone. One such individual is Steve Williams, a 60-year-old man diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. Until recently, he faced significant challenges in communication.

“Communication shouldn’t be a luxury,” Sacristan emphasized. “It should be a fundamental right to be heard and understood.” Williams’ journey illustrates this point effectively. “When Williams came in, I was like, we’re gonna get Steve a device, he’s gonna talk everyone’s ear off, and that’s exactly what happened,” Sacristan recounted.

A Successful Fundraising Effort

Thanks to the generous donations from supporters of UCP San Diego, Williams received a comprehensive communication package that included an iPad, specialized software, a protective case, and a mount, all provided at no cost to him. This support exemplifies the impact of community fundraising efforts.

For those interested in contributing to UCP San Diego’s mission, donations can be made through their website at ucpsd.org. The funds raised during events like the charity golf tournament are vital for continuing to provide essential resources to individuals in need.

The ongoing support of the community highlights the importance of advocacy for people living with disabilities. As UCP continues to expand its reach, events like the charity golf tournament play a crucial role in funding their programs and services, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to communicate and connect.

Williams’ story is a testament to the positive change that can occur when communities come together. With continued support, UCP San Diego aims to transform the communication landscape for individuals affected by cerebral palsy and other disabilities.
