Anadolu Robotik revealed its latest innovation, the Arida-M Counter-Kamikaze Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV), at the SAHA EXPO 2024 in Istanbul. This advancement positions Turkey as a leading force in unmanned naval technology, specifically designed to combat the increasing threat of kamikaze drones and explosive-laden boats, which have become prominent in recent conflicts.
The Arida-M represents a strategic response to modern naval warfare challenges. As evidenced in the Russia-Ukraine War and ongoing Houthi operations in the Red Sea, kamikaze USVs pose serious risks to traditional naval vessels. Understanding the Arida-M’s Role
Kamikaze USVs are increasingly recognized as a formidable threat. They are often small, fast, and equipped with explosives, making them capable of significant destruction at sea. These vessels can evade detection and overwhelm defenses, as seen in the Black Sea engagements where Ukrainian drones successfully targeted Russian ships.
In light of this, Turkey’s Arida-M project aims to provide a robust countermeasure. Features and Development Timeline of the Arida-M
The first phase of the Arida-M focuses on its role as a “smart munition,” with sea trials having commenced in May 2025. Following these trials, the project will advance to incorporate the Arida-T command unit and additional prototypes, with live detonation tests scheduled for November 2026.
The Arida system is designed to be modular, featuring two primary subsystems tailored for specific missions. The Arida-T acts as a command-and-control platform, equipped with electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, hydrophones, radar, and a 30 km range jammer to disrupt enemy data links and video feeds.
Conversely, the Arida-M focuses on intercepting enemy USVs. Central to this system are the Muhafiz USVs, which carry a payload of 30 kilograms for sensors and communications, alongside 50 kilograms of explosives for neutralizing targets. These vessels are engineered for harsh marine conditions, allowing them to operate effectively in both coastal and open waters.
The Arida-M’s advanced capabilities include multi-layered sensing technologies, combining radar, EO systems, and hydrophones for comprehensive threat detection, even against low-signature targets. Additionally, its autonomous features enable the USVs to deploy from warships or shore bases, navigate independently, and engage targets according to predefined protocols.
Turkey’s investment in the Arida-M system signifies a strategic advancement in naval warfare. As a potential exportable technology, it enhances layered defense systems, complementing existing platforms such as the ULAQ USV family.
