Trial Begins for Former New York Aide Accused of Chinese Espionage

Opening statements commenced on March 6, 2024, in the trial of Linda Sun, a former aide to two New York governors, who faces serious charges of being an undisclosed agent for the Chinese government. Sun, who served under Andrew Cuomo and Kathy Hochul, is also accused of illegally profiting from New York’s bulk purchases of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sun and her husband, Chris Hu, were arrested in 2023 at their residence in Manhasset, a wealthy community on the North Shore of Long Island, where they own a nearly $4 million mansion. The indictment against them spans over 50 pages and details allegations that they accrued millions in benefits while acquiring luxurious properties, including a condominium in Honolulu, and high-end vehicles, such as a Ferrari.

Hu, who operates a liquor store, faces additional charges of money laundering and bank fraud. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.

Sun’s role in the New York state government included serving as deputy chief of staff during her 13-year tenure. Prosecutors allege that she acted covertly on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party, claiming she obstructed access to the governor’s office for officials from Taiwan. Furthermore, she is accused of forging Kathy Hochul’s signature and tampering with communications from New York state officials regarding matters pertinent to China.

In response to the allegations, Governor Hochul expressed her shock and outrage, describing Sun’s actions as a “betrayal of trust.” The unfolding trial has drawn significant attention, reflecting broader concerns about espionage and foreign influence within US state governments.

The prosecution will attempt to substantiate its claims over the coming weeks, while the defense seeks to refute the allegations and establish the innocence of both Sun and Hu. The outcome of this high-profile case could have implications beyond the courtroom, bringing further scrutiny to the relationships between state officials and foreign entities.
