Senator Warnock Welcomes Monks on 2,300-Mile Peace Walk

U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) extended a warm welcome to nearly two dozen Buddhist monks last week in Decatur, Georgia. The monks are undertaking a remarkable 2,300-mile journey from Texas to Washington, D.C., aimed at fostering peace and unity across the nation. Their visit to Decatur was marked by a poignant speech from Senator Warnock, who praised their commitment to putting faith into action.

Honor for a Peaceful Mission

During the event, Senator Warnock highlighted the significance of their mission. “These monks understand, as did Georgia’s greatest son, Martin Luther King, Jr., that it’s not simply enough to pray for peace with our lips,” he stated. “We must pray with our legs. We have to put our faith into action.” His words resonated with the gathered crowd, emphasizing the importance of active engagement in the pursuit of peace.

Senator Warnock took a moment to acknowledge the resilience of one of the monks, Venerable Phra-Ajarnh Maha Dam Phommasan, who had been struck by a car earlier in the journey. The accident resulted in the amputation of his leg. “While we are excited by their arrival, let us not forget that this journey has not been easy,” Warnock remarked. “We are especially keeping him in our prayers while he recovers at home in Snellville. He is a son of Georgia, and we pray for his continual healing and peace.”

A Legacy of Service

Senator Warnock serves as the Senior Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, a historic site once led by Dr. King himself. Since 2005, he has been dedicated to both spiritual guidance and community activism. The senator has long advocated for prayer that extends beyond the church walls, believing in the necessity of organizing and protesting for justice.

His remarks during the monks’ visit highlighted a shared commitment to social activism, drawing parallels between their peaceful march and the civil rights movement that shaped much of Georgia’s history. The journey of the monks serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and action in addressing societal issues.

The monks, representing various Buddhist traditions, continue their trek toward the nation’s capital, where they aim to share their message of peace and unity with a broader audience. This initiative not only underscores the importance of dialogue and understanding but also reflects a collective desire for harmony in a time of division.
