Scott Jensen, the Republican nominee for governor of Minnesota in the previous election cycle, has officially withdrawn from the race for governor in 2024. Instead, he will pursue the position of state auditor. Jensen announced this decision on March 4, 2024, following a disappointing performance in the recent Republican precinct caucus straw poll, where he finished in fourth place.
In a video statement, Jensen expressed his belief in the strength of the current field of candidates vying for the gubernatorial nomination. “We have excellent candidates running for governor, and I am confident that one of my colleagues will be well-positioned to win in November,” he stated. He indicated that this shift allows him to concentrate on his objectives regarding fiscal accountability and government transparency.
The role of state auditor primarily involves oversight of local government spending and ensuring the appropriate use of taxpayer funds. Jensen emphasized his commitment to addressing these issues: “I am ready and determined to be the person who opens up the hood and looks at what the engine of our government is doing and not doing — and fix it.” His focus on restoring trust in government and tackling misuse of taxpayer money marks a significant pivot in his political strategy.
Current DFL State Auditor Julie Blaha is not seeking re-election, leaving the position open for new candidates. Both Democratic and Republican contenders are competing for their parties’ nominations, creating a dynamic political landscape in Minnesota ahead of the upcoming elections.
As Jensen turns his attention to the auditor’s race, the political climate is likely to evolve, with many potential candidates positioning themselves for leadership roles in the state. His decision may influence the strategies of his former gubernatorial rivals as they prepare for the primary elections.
