San Diego Border Patrol Welcomes Justin De La Torre as New Chief

The U.S. Border Patrol’s San Diego Sector has appointed agency veteran Justin M. De La Torre as its new Chief Patrol Agent, effective Monday. A native of San Diego, De La Torre brings over 25 years of experience within the agency, having held various leadership roles during his career. His prior position was as Chief Patrol Agent of the Yuma Sector in Arizona.

In his first statement as Chief, De La Torre expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to return to San Diego. “It’s an honor to return to the sector where my career began,” he said. He emphasized the importance of the San Diego agents, stating that their dedication to service has profoundly influenced his leadership style. He acknowledged the commitment of his team to the agency’s motto of “Honor First,” which he believes is vital to their mission.

De La Torre’s extensive background includes specialized assignments in several units, such as the All-Terrain Vehicle Unit, the Alien Smuggler Identification and Deterrence program, and the Border Patrol Tactical Unit. Agency officials highlighted that his diverse experience spans numerous leadership positions, including tenures in three different southwestern border sectors and at the U.S. Border Patrol headquarters in Washington, D.C.

A Commitment to Leadership and Community

Having entered on-duty service in January 2000, De La Torre was initially assigned to the Imperial Beach Station in San Diego. He credits this early assignment with laying the foundation for his operational excellence and career advancement. His return to the San Diego sector is not just a professional milestone but also a personal homecoming to a community he holds dear.

The current Chief Patrol Agent, Jeffrey Stalnaker, will continue to serve in San Diego as the Deputy Chief Patrol Agent. The transition in leadership marks a significant moment for the San Diego Border Patrol, which has faced various challenges in recent years, including increased illegal crossings and resource management.

Looking Ahead

De La Torre’s appointment comes at a crucial time for border security and community relations in the San Diego region. With his extensive background and deep understanding of the area’s unique challenges, many hope his leadership will enhance the effectiveness of the Border Patrol in fulfilling its mission.

As De La Torre steps into his new role, his commitment to the men and women of the San Diego Sector remains evident. His leadership is expected to focus on both operational efficiency and community engagement as the agency navigates its responsibilities in a complex and evolving landscape.
