Rob Richardson is officially campaigning for a second term on the Frankfort Board of Commissioners. After two years in office, he aims to continue his work in enhancing community services and ensuring fiscal responsibility. “Serving as an elected official has given me better insight into the scope of all city operations,” Richardson stated, emphasizing his commitment to improving the lives of residents through a practical approach to governance.
During his first term, Richardson has been instrumental in several key initiatives. He is particularly proud of the city’s fiscal management, which has resulted in operating within budget while generating a surplus. “This was a big priority of mine given the challenges of finding new revenue and identifying areas to make cuts,” he explained. A significant achievement in this area was the adoption of OpenGov, a tool designed to enhance the efficiency of the finance department and facilitate better communication among city departments.
Major Projects and Priorities
Another notable project under Richardson’s leadership is the construction of the Frankfort Fire Department Station 1 on West Second Street, a development that promises to bolster fire and emergency medical services in the city. “This project will provide state-of-the-art technology and training for first responders, benefiting local residents,” he remarked.
Richardson has also focused on infrastructure needs, particularly in the Paddocks development, which he believes will foster economic growth and increase city revenues over time. “This development will increase revenues as it grows over the years,” he noted.
Reflecting on his experience as a commissioner, Richardson recalled advice he received early in his tenure about the commitment required for the role. He has established a weekly meeting with the city manager to discuss operations and strategic planning. “Serving requires research, dedication, and the willingness to learn,” he added.
A veteran of law enforcement, Richardson began his career as a patrol officer with the Frankfort Police Department in 1994, eventually rising to the position of assistant police chief before retiring in 2017. He now serves as a law enforcement liaison with the Kentucky Association Chiefs of Police, a role that allows him to connect with leaders across the state and share valuable insights with the city commission.
Vision for the Future
As he campaigns for reelection, Richardson has outlined several priorities. Expanding the city sewer system is at the top of his list, which he believes will promote growth and economic development. He is also committed to enhancing public safety, ensuring that first responders have the necessary resources and training.
Maintaining budgetary discipline remains a critical focus for Richardson. “City staff, along with strategic planning, has ensured that resources are allocated effectively, contributing to the financial health of the city,” he stated.
Richardson is passionate about the potential development of a downtown convention and meeting center, which he believes will stimulate economic growth. He also recognizes the pressing need for residential housing in the area. “We do have property that is zoned residential on the west side of Frankfort that I have been seeking for development,” he explained, underscoring the importance of retaining the workforce within the city limits to boost the tax base.
In addition to these initiatives, he advocates for riverfront development that could enhance tourism and recreational options, including a potential swimming pool or recreation center.
Outside of his professional commitments, Richardson, who has been married to his wife Kim for nearly 33 years, is a father to three daughters: Kolby (29), Lexie (28), and Maggie (21). He concluded, “It has been a pleasure serving on the Frankfort city commission for the past year. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent my community and look forward to continuing this work.” Richardson aims to secure a second term in the upcoming elections in March 2024.
