Richard Gere Shares Parenting Wisdom from the Dalai Lama

Richard Gere, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in films such as “Pretty Woman,” has revealed that the most valuable parenting advice he imparts to his children stems from the teachings of the Dalai Lama. At 76 years old, Gere emphasizes the importance of kindness as a fundamental lesson he wishes his sons to embrace.

In an interview with People published on October 7, 2023, Gere reflected on the influence of his long-standing friendship with the Dalai Lama, who he has known for decades. The actor, a practicing Buddhist since 1978, has infused his spiritual beliefs into his parenting approach.

Gere articulated his core message, stating, “You show kindness. That’s the best thing you can do.” This principle is not just a personal mantra for Gere; it is a lesson inspired by a conversation he recalls between a couple he knew and the Dalai Lama.

The conversation occurred years ago when the couple, concerned about bringing a child into the world, sought guidance from the spiritual leader. Gere recounted, “His Holiness was asked… how do you teach them?” The Dalai Lama’s response offered profound insight: “Teach them to be kind to insects, whom normally people don’t think well of and step on and don’t even think about it. To even respect the life of an insect, that’s something that carries over into all of your life.”

This message resonates deeply with Gere, who wishes to instill a sense of compassion and respect for all living beings in his three sons—one from his previous marriage to Carey Lowell and two with his current wife, Alejandra Silva.

Spiritual Journey and Influence

Gere’s spiritual exploration began in his 20s, a time when he grappled with existential questions about purpose and meaning. He explained, “It wasn’t a particular event, but I think there was just an ongoing innate questioning of what is this? Why am I here? What am I supposed to do of any value?” These reflections guided him toward Buddhism and solidified his friendship with the Dalai Lama.

In a separate interview with GQ, Gere recounted his first meeting with the Dalai Lama in the foothills of the Himalayas, where the spiritual leader was living in exile. He described the Dalai Lama as “completely simple and direct and honest,” likening the experience to conversing with a beloved uncle or an inspiring professor.

His commitment to promoting the Dalai Lama’s teachings extends beyond personal reflections. Gere served as a producer for the documentary “Wisdom of Happiness,” which features the spiritual leader and premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in October 2024.

Through his enduring friendship with the Dalai Lama and his dedication to Buddhist principles, Richard Gere continues to inspire others while navigating the complexities of parenthood. His focus on kindness serves as a reminder of the profound impact simple virtues can have in shaping the next generation.
