Wilie Darasaw, Sr., a respected veteran and community leader, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2001, at the age of 103. Born on September 24, 1922, in Ocilla, Georgia, he dedicated his life to service, both in military and civilian capacities.
As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, Darasaw served in the South Pacific during World War II, where he displayed remarkable courage and commitment. Following his military service, he began a career as a welder at the Norfolk Shipyard, a role he held until his retirement in 1980. His work ethic and dedication earned him the respect of his colleagues and the community.
Darasaw’s faith played a significant role in his life. He accepted Christ at a young age and became a lifelong member of the African American Episcopal Church. Upon relocating to Portsmouth, Virginia, he became an active member of Emanuel A.M.E. Church, where he served for over 60 years as a beloved Scoutmaster and Steward. His contributions to the church and the community were widely recognized and appreciated.
In 1946, Darasaw married his beloved wife, Johnie Mae Murray. Their marriage lasted for 70 years until her passing on November 6, 2016. Together, they exemplified a partnership filled with love, support, and mutual respect. Their union was a source of inspiration for many in their community.
Wilie Darasaw, Sr. is survived by his sons, Willie Jr. (Dollie Huggins) and Lloyd (Denise), his sister-in-law Mildred Delores Murray, and his grandchildren, including Maya Darasaw and Kimani Darasaw (Paula). He also leaves behind great-granddaughters Kimberly and Julianna Darasaw, who will continue to carry forward his legacy.
A celebration of Wilie Darasaw’s life will take place at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Emanuel A.M.E. Church, located at 637 North St., Portsmouth, Virginia, 23704. Following the service, interment will occur at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum.
