He was known for his deep connection to his Appalachian roots and often contemplated writing a memoir titled “Growing Up Appalachia,” a reflection of his formative years in southwest Virginia.

After completing high school, Wolfe attended Lees-McRae College, where he excelled in basketball. In 1974, Wolfe took on the role of state director for the Division of Languages, showcasing his expertise and commitment to education. His passion for basketball remained evident as he was a dedicated fan of the Duke Blue Devils.

In 1979, Wolfe joined Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, as a professor of English Education. Over the next 23 years, he held various significant positions and contributed greatly to the academic community. He trained countless teachers, authored more than 80 publications, and wrote four books. Wolfe also led the Tidewater Writing Project and served as a principal investigator on multiple grants.

Wolfe was well-regarded within the College of Education for his calm demeanor, sense of humor, and openness to new ideas. His colleagues appreciated his willingness to lend a helping hand and his commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment.

After retiring in 2002, Wolfe left behind a rich legacy of academic achievement and dedicated service to Old Dominion University. He is survived by his wife, Catherine, whom he was married to for 28 years, as well as his son Cary and daughter Ashley Long, along with her husband John. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Riley Long and Owen Long.
