PetSmart Reveals 25 U.S. Cities Leading in Dog Adoption

PetSmart has announced the top 25 U.S. cities recognized for their dedication to dog adoption. This revelation comes ahead of PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week, scheduled for March 23-29, 2026. In 2025, dog adoptions during in-store events organized by PetSmart Charities increased by 11 percent compared to the previous year, exceeding 90,000 adoptions.

As part of the announcement, PetSmart identified cities where residents not only adopt dogs but also invest in their care through the purchase of toys, treats, and grooming products. According to the Shelter Animal Count, dogs are spending more time in shelters than before the pandemic, particularly larger breeds that require loving homes. In response, PetSmart has introduced monthly in-store adoption events under the initiative Adopt Joy™, collaborating with local shelters to expedite the adoption process.

Celebrating Dog-Loving Communities

Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities, emphasized the importance of community involvement in dog adoption. “From metropolitan areas to growing suburbs and smaller communities across the country, these 25 cities show that love for dogs is universal and can transform pets’ lives, and also their own,” she stated. Gilbreath hopes that these rankings will inspire more residents to consider adopting pets from local shelters.

The ranking of these cities is based on PetSmart’s internal data, assessing both the number of dog adoptions recorded from January 8, 2025, through January 7, 2026, and customer spending on dog-related products. The methodology accounts for the number of PetSmart locations in each city, providing a fair comparison. The final rankings utilized a weighted formula, attributing 37% to adoptions and 63% to product sales, reflecting the diverse ways communities support their canine companions.

National Adoption Week and Local Impact

During PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week, local shelters will showcase adoptable pets in PetSmart stores nationwide. This initiative allows potential pet parents the opportunity to interact with dogs while receiving valuable information about pet care and adoption resources. PetSmart encourages individuals to visit their local stores to find a new best friend and contribute to their community’s ranking in dog adoption.

Matt Byrnes, senior vice president of merchandising at PetSmart, noted the passion of dog owners in these cities. “Top Dog Cities are home to passionate pet parents who treat their dogs like family, and we’re seeing that reflected in how they shop,” Byrnes remarked. He highlighted that these cities make thoughtful purchases, ensuring their dogs enjoy a happier, healthier life.

PetSmart offers a wide range of products for dogs, available in stores, at PetSmart.com, and through the PetSmart app. The company provides various expert services, including grooming, veterinary care, and training, further supporting pet parents in their journey.

For over 30 years, PetSmart Charities has worked alongside local shelters to facilitate pet adoptions. The organization has become a leading force in animal welfare, helping more than 11 million pets find loving homes through in-store adoption programs.
