A recent incident involving a passenger on an internal flight in India has ignited a fierce debate online regarding appropriate behavior in public spaces. The situation came to light when a user on the social media platform Threads posted a photograph showing a woman seated with her bare feet on the chair in front of her during a flight from Chennai to Bangalore.
The post, shared by user @mammenmaria, quickly garnered attention, amassing over 4,500 likes and 6,900 comments within a short period. In her post, Mammen expressed her irritation, stating, “How irritating is it when the passenger in your row sits with her feet up on the seat like she’s sitting on her living room sofa? She sat like that the entire duration of the flight!”
Mammen elaborated in an interview with Newsweek, saying, “Putting your feet up on a public seat is not the way to treat public property. I would put my feet up on my sofa and not on a public seat.” This comment sparked a wide array of responses from other users, illustrating a divide in opinions about the etiquette of air travel.
While many users sided with Mammen, suggesting that such behavior is disrespectful, others defended the woman’s choice. A user identified as Artid14 commented, “She is sitting in her space, not encroaching yours. What’s your problem? Jealousy at her being able to sit like that?” In contrast, another user, Shish_21_06, criticized the general lack of civic sense in the country, emphasizing the importance of basic decency in public spaces.
The debate highlights differing perceptions of acceptable conduct during flights. Some believe that there are boundaries between personal comfort and respect for shared spaces. User Surendar.vijay.9 expressed this sentiment, noting, “I think there’s a line between behavior in a public space and in a private space. However blurred that line may be, sitting with shoes off and feet on the seat is far beyond the blur.”
In response to the mixed reactions, the travel company Booking.com has provided guidelines on flying etiquette. Their advice includes refraining from removing shoes during flights due to potential safety hazards during critical phases like boarding and landing. Furthermore, they recommend that passengers keep their feet covered and clean, and avoid placing feet on other passengers’ seats as it can be uncomfortable and intrusive.
Additional etiquette tips from Booking.com highlight the importance of greeting cabin crew, removing headphones during safety briefings, and being considerate with overhead bins. Passengers are encouraged to wait their turn when boarding or disembarking, check with fellow travelers before reclining their seats, and share armrests fairly. Keeping conversations and phone calls quiet, avoiding strong-smelling foods, and being especially courteous during long flights are also emphasized.
As this incident continues to circulate on social media, it serves as a reminder of the diverse opinions surrounding travel etiquette and the expectations of behavior in shared spaces.
