Former Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price has officially announced her candidacy to reclaim her position, just over a year after being recalled by nearly 63% of voters. Price made her announcement on October 5, 2023, emphasizing her commitment to combatting gun violence and opposing policies from the Trump administration.
During her speech, Price expressed a deep connection to the community, stating, “We are standing here before you today in love. Out of our love for our community. Our love for our families. A love for justice.” Her return to the political arena comes amid ongoing discussions about public safety and the effectiveness of her previous term.
Brenda Grisham, a victims’ advocate who spearheaded the recall campaign, expressed surprise at Price’s decision to run again. Grisham voiced skepticism about the potential for change, saying, “We’ve been watching her over the year and I don’t see any change.” She highlighted the importance of communication with victims, which she felt was lacking during Price’s tenure.
Price’s campaign is focused on addressing gun violence, which has been a pressing issue in Alameda County. She cited her reaction to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in local communities as a motivating factor for her run. “I would say to ICE and any other federal agency who violate state law, f around and find out,” Price stated, asserting her commitment to fairness and justice.
Critics, including Grisham, argue that Price failed to deliver justice during her previous administration, especially for victims of violent crime. Grisham, whose son was killed in 2010, referred to specific cases that she believes highlight Price’s shortcomings, stating, “There were no special circumstances. I mean, they killed that little 5-year-old girl in front of her family.”
The political landscape in Alameda County has shifted since Price’s recall, with many voters now favoring progressive district attorneys. Price remarked on the changes, stating, “In 2024 in Alameda County, we saw the same carnage… The destabilization of our justice system by a billionaire.” This comment references the significant financial backing behind her recall campaign, which has been attributed to wealthy individuals seeking to influence local politics.
During Price’s term, Oakland experienced a surge in violent crime, recording the highest number of murders in a decade, with 114 in 2023 alone. This spike in crime has led many residents to demand a district attorney who prioritizes safety and community well-being. Grisham believes Price has not adequately acknowledged the desires of local citizens, stating, “The whole time she’s been bypassing the fact that everyday citizens felt they needed change.”
As the election approaches, the race for Alameda County District Attorney will likely reignite discussions about public safety, accountability, and the role of the district attorney in addressing community concerns. Price’s candidacy presents a renewed opportunity for voters to evaluate her vision for justice in the county.
