Madison County has joined a statewide initiative aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. The campaign, known as the STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign, commenced on August 13, 2023, and will run until September 1, 2023. This effort is particularly timely as it coincides with the Labor Day weekend, a peak travel period that often sees an increase in road traffic.
Coordinated Efforts to Enhance Road Safety
Matthew White, the Madison County STOP-DWI Coordinator, announced that local police agencies will actively participate in this initiative. The campaign will feature a range of activities designed to educate the public about the risks associated with impaired driving. Among these activities, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office plans to conduct a STOP-DWI checkpoint from 18:00 on August 29 to 02:00 on August 30.
This year, the Labor Day weekend marks the official end of summer and is recognized as one of the busiest travel times of the year. In a collaborative effort, the New York State Police, county sheriffs, municipal law enforcement agencies, and local STOP-DWI programs will be on heightened alert to deter impaired driving and reduce related injuries and fatalities.
Ongoing Campaigns and Public Engagement
The STOP-DWI Labor Day campaign is part of a broader series of initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Other significant dates targeted by these campaigns include Memorial Day, Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season, Super Bowl weekend, and St. Patrick’s Day.
These high-visibility campaigns aim to tackle the issue of drunk and impaired driving through public engagement and education. The message is clear: impaired driving is preventable. Residents can contribute to safer roads by planning ahead and ensuring they have a sober way to get home.
To assist with this, the public is encouraged to download the “Have a Plan” mobile app, available at www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp. This app provides users with options for safe transportation to prevent impaired driving.
As the Labor Day weekend approaches, the emphasis remains on responsible driving behaviors. Local authorities and STOP-DWI advocates stress the importance of making a sober plan to avoid the dangers of impaired driving. Together, through awareness and preparation, the community can work towards a safer holiday weekend.
