Lake County, Ohio, is in the process of selecting a temporary replacement for Commissioner President Richard J. Regovich, who passed away last week after a battle with cancer. The Lake County Republican Party Central Committee has a window of 45 days to appoint a successor, as specified by the County Commissioners Association of Ohio.
Appointment Timeline and Election Details
According to Nick Ciolli, a policy analyst for the association, the Central Committee must convene within five to 45 days of the vacancy to name an appointee. This individual will serve until the next general election scheduled for November 3, 2026, when voters will choose a candidate to fulfill the remaining term of Regovich, which extends until January 1, 2029. Regovich, a lifelong resident of Willowick and a former mayor, had been re-elected in 2024 for a four-year term.
It is important to note that the appointee is not required to run in the upcoming 2026 election but has the option to do so. Should the appointee secure a victory, they will serve the remaining two years of Regovich’s term. If another candidate wins the election, that person will complete the term based on the timeline established by the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office and the county board of elections.
Possible Interim Measures
State law permits county commissioners to designate an acting commissioner to ensure continuity of governance until the new appointee assumes office. It remains uncertain whether Lake County will pursue this option. Cleveland.com has reached out to county officials for clarification on how they plan to proceed in light of Regovich’s passing.
Regovich, aged 59 at the time of his death, was well-regarded in the community for his service and contributions, particularly in support of seniors, families, and various community initiatives. His leadership was recognized by his colleagues when he was selected as board president in January.
The Lake County Republican Party is expected to outline its timeline for the appointment shortly. The community awaits further details on how the vacancy will be addressed as local officials navigate this transition.
