Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has indicated a potential run for the presidency in the upcoming 2028 election. In an interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, scheduled to air on Sunday, Harris expressed her belief that her grandnieces would witness a woman in the White House, hinting that it could be her. She stated, “I am not done. I have lived my entire career as a life of service and it’s in my bones.”
Harris, who recently celebrated her 61st birthday, emphasized that she has not made a final decision regarding her candidacy, noting that there is still more than three years until the election. Her remarks come after a challenging political landscape, following her loss to Donald Trump in the 2024 election. This defeat occurred after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race in July 2024, just weeks before the Democratic convention.
In her new book, 107 Days, released on September 23, 2023, Harris reflects on the brief duration of her campaign. Despite facing polls that suggest she is trailing behind California Governor Gavin Newsom for the Democratic nomination, she dismissed their relevance. “If I listened to polls I would have not run for my first office, or my second office – and I certainly wouldn’t be sitting here,” she asserted, recalling her previous roles as California senator and attorney general.
Harris did not hold back her criticisms of Trump, labeling him a “tyrant.” The White House responded to her remarks through spokesperson Abigail Jackson, who stated, “When Kamala Harris lost the election in a landslide, she should’ve taken the hint—the American people don’t care about her absurd lies.” In the 2024 election, Trump secured the popular vote with 77.3 million votes to Harris’s 75 million, winning the Electoral College with a tally of 312 to 226.
During her interview, Harris reiterated warnings she issued while campaigning, remarking that Trump has indeed weaponized the Department of Justice, as he had promised. She further criticized his tactics regarding federal agencies, stating, “His skin is so thin he couldn’t endure criticism from a joke, and attempted to shut down an entire media organization in the process.”
Harris also addressed the role of business leaders and institutions in relation to Trump’s demands, asserting that many have capitulated to his authority. “There are many… that have capitulated since day one, who are bending the knee at the foot of a tyrant,” she remarked, suggesting that motivations may include a desire for proximity to power or avoiding investigations.
In July 2023, Harris made it clear that she would not pursue the position of California governor in 2026, stating, “For now, my leadership—and public service—will not be in elected office.” As she contemplates her future, Harris’s intentions for the 2028 election remain a focal point for observers of American politics.
