Dr. Jena Lyn Miller, an internationally recognized leader in fetal diagnosis and treatment, has been appointed as the new Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Announced on January 5, 2026, this significant appointment marks a pivotal moment for CHOP as it continues to enhance its leadership in fetal care.
In her role, Dr. Miller will work alongside N. Scott Adzick, MD, a pioneer in fetal medicine, as Co-Director of the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT). Dr. Miller also holds the George Leib Harrison Endowed Chair in Fetal Therapy at CHOP. Dr. Adzick expressed enthusiasm about the addition of Dr. Miller, stating, “We are not only gaining an outstanding clinician and researcher but also a partner who will help us continue our role as a global leader in fetal care.”
Dr. Miller brings over a decade of experience from Johns Hopkins University, where she was instrumental in establishing the Johns Hopkins Center for Fetal Therapy. As Deputy Director, she developed a program specializing in minimally invasive fetal interventions. Her extensive background includes serving as Director of Obstetric Ultrasound at Johns Hopkins Hospital and as an Associate Professor in both the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Department of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Her clinical expertise focuses on complex fetal conditions, particularly in performing in utero interventions such as ultrasound-guided needle procedures, operative fetoscopy, and open fetal surgery. Dr. Miller’s specialized work includes addressing spina bifida, a condition where the spinal column does not develop correctly, through surgical methods before birth.
Future Goals and Commitment to Innovation
In her new position, Dr. Miller aims to lead CHOP’s Maternal Fetal Medicine team and Obstetric Services with a commitment to advancing patient care. “I’m honored to join a team with decades of experience and a proven ability to push boundaries in care,” she stated. Dr. Miller emphasized her dedication to addressing urgent needs with diligence and compassion, while fostering collaboration across disciplines.
In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Miller has a strong commitment to education and mentorship. She regularly guides fellows, residents, and medical students, contributing to the next generation of healthcare professionals. She received her medical degree and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, followed by a Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Miller has actively participated in leadership roles within the North American Fetal Therapy Network and engages with the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, among other organizations. Her experience and innovative mindset will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing success and reputation of CHOP’s fetal care programs.
Since its inception in 1995, the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment has provided care to over 35,100 expectant parents from all 50 states and more than 70 countries. The center has successfully managed thousands of pregnancies complicated by congenital birth defects, ensuring that newborns receive immediate specialized medical care or surgery following delivery.
