Italy is set to withdraw its remaining troops from the military base in Erbil, northern Iraq, following a missile strike on the facility. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto announced the decision on Thursday, clarifying that the withdrawal had been planned prior to the attack. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries among Italian personnel, as all troops moved into protected areas in accordance with pre-established security procedures.
The drawdown reflects Italy’s ongoing efforts to reduce its military presence in the region, primarily due to rising security concerns. Crosetto indicated that 102 personnel have already returned to Italy, while approximately 40 others were relocated to Jordan. He noted that the return of the remaining troops is being organized but acknowledged that the operation poses logistical challenges since they cannot be evacuated directly by air. Instead, troops are expected to depart overland, likely through Türkiye.
Assessment of the Attack’s Intent
When questioned about the nature of the missile strike, Crosetto told Italian public broadcaster RAI that it appeared to be a deliberate attack. He emphasized that the Erbil base is a NATO installation and also houses infrastructure for the United States. The Defence Minister stated that the potential for an attack had been foreseen, prompting the implementation of security measures earlier on the day of the strike.
Regional Context and Implications
This incident occurs against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the region, particularly involving Iran. Following strikes by the United States and Israel that began on February 28, 2023, Iranian forces have retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting various locations across the region.
The situation is particularly critical for Hungary, which has also deployed soldiers to the Erbil base as part of international coalition efforts in Iraq. The ongoing conflict raises the risk levels for allied forces stationed at vital coalition facilities, amplifying concerns regarding their safety and operational effectiveness.
As Italy prepares to complete its troop withdrawal, the broader implications of this military drawdown and the regional instability remain a focal point for both Italian and allied authorities.
