Helen Mirren Challenges Tech Industry’s Pursuit of Eternal Youth

In a recent interview with Elle, acclaimed actor Helen Mirren, 80, expressed her skepticism about the tech industry’s obsession with achieving eternal youth. Mirren criticized the so-called “tech bros” who are attempting to “hack” aging, suggesting they are avoiding the reality of growing old. She emphasized that aging should not be viewed negatively; rather, it is a natural part of life.

Mirren articulated her perspective on longevity, stating, “To me, the word longevity is being active, proactive, and productive over a long period of one’s life.” She believes that truly living involves embracing the physical aspects of life, appreciating nature, enjoying professional achievements, and nurturing relationships with family and friends.

Mirren explained that chasing eternal youth can distract from the fundamental joys of life. “Life is finite,” she stated, highlighting the absurdity of trying to escape aging. “As much as people like to put themselves into ice, hoping that they might wake up in 50 years, it’s a dream and a fantasy.” She further noted, “I don’t call it growing old. I call it growing up. The tech bros who cannot face the idea that they will get old and die just can’t deal with it.”

Mirren’s views on aging are not new. In an interview with Allure in October 2023, she expressed her love for the process of getting older. “Fuck it, I’m alive and I’m working,” she said, celebrating the simple pleasures of life such as enjoying a glass of wine, watching a sunset, and visiting the theater. Her candid remarks resonate with many who view aging as a privilege rather than a burden.

To maintain her health, Mirren advocates for a 12-minute military workout originally developed by the Royal Canadian Air Force in the 1950s. She believes it is never too late to start exercising, especially for those in their 50s and 60s. “It doesn’t have to be joining a gym,” she advised, suggesting that even small changes, like taking a short walk or practicing yoga, can significantly benefit overall well-being.

In an era where youthfulness is often idolized, Mirren’s perspective serves as a refreshing reminder to embrace the beauty of aging and the experiences that come with it. As she continues to thrive in her career and personal life, her message resonates more than ever: growing up is a lifelong journey worth celebrating.
