Hamtramck’s Mayor Amer Ghalib met with senior White House officials on August 20, 2023, to seek federal assistance for his city and immigration relief for Yemeni residents. During discussions at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Ghalib engaged with Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, and Stephen Miller, the Homeland Security Advisor. The mayor’s primary aim is to secure funding to address pressing issues related to infrastructure, public safety, and support for Yemeni immigrants affected by recent travel restrictions.
Ghalib expressed optimism about the outcomes of the meetings, stating, “We asked for a lot of resources for Hamtramck. They were very cooperative, very receptive.” He emphasized the importance of the discussions, indicating that securing federal funds could significantly alleviate some chronic challenges faced by the city, including its high poverty rate, which stands at approximately 38% for the overall population and 48% for residents under the age of 18, according to 2023 census data. The national average poverty rate is 12.5%.
Following the meetings, Ghalib sent a follow-up email to the officials, detailing the city’s needs. “If it does get approved, I would consider this visit the most productive visit in the history of Hamtramck,” he remarked. While Ghalib did not specify the exact projects that may benefit from the potential funding, he noted that local officials and residents have identified critical areas requiring financial support, including infrastructure improvements, housing, and road repairs.
Hamtramck is notable for its significant immigrant population, particularly from Yemen, which has faced challenges due to a recent proclamation issued on June 4 that suspended entry into the United States for nationals of Yemen. This policy, part of a broader travel ban affecting 12 countries, has created barriers for Yemeni Americans seeking to reunite with family members. Ghalib, born in Yemen, articulated his hope for relief for Yemeni immigrants, stating, “By the end of the 90 days review period, hopefully, we hear some good news regarding the immigration restrictions.”
The mayor’s visit to the White House comes amid his ongoing efforts to advocate for the Yemeni American community. Ghalib’s political journey has included support for former President Donald Trump, as he endorsed Trump last September and participated in a rally in Hamtramck. His alignment with Trump reflects frustrations felt within the Yemeni American community regarding their treatment by the Democratic Party in Wayne County. In March, Trump nominated Ghalib for the position of ambassador to Kuwait, a role for which he is still awaiting Senate confirmation.
Ghalib’s administration has faced scrutiny due to recent controversies involving local officials. During a council meeting on August 26, the council voted to terminate the city manager amid allegations of misconduct. The mayor acknowledged the difficult decisions made, stating, “Not that we wanted to terminate anybody, but it seems like the only solution at this time.”
Despite the challenges, Councilman Mohammed Hassan commended Ghalib for securing a meeting at the White House, highlighting the rarity of such opportunities for a city like Hamtramck, which has a population of approximately 28,433. “You make us proud,” Hassan remarked, recognizing Ghalib’s efforts to advocate for his community at the federal level.
As the mayor looks to leave a positive impact before the upcoming mayoral election in November, he remains hopeful for tangible results from his discussions. “I would be happy to accomplish something for the community before I leave,” Ghalib stated, reflecting his commitment to addressing the needs of Hamtramck’s residents.
