German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued a strong warning to Israel regarding the potential annexation of the West Bank. Speaking in Aqaba, Jordan, on October 7, 2023, after a meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah II, Merz emphasized the importance of maintaining a path towards Palestinian statehood.
“The situation in the West Bank must not be lost sight of. We must keep the path to Palestinian statehood open. Therefore, there must be no annexation steps in the West Bank,” Merz stated. His comments reflect growing concerns about the influence of ultra-right factions within Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s government, which has long advocated for the annexation of territories that Palestinians consider vital for a future independent state.
Merz expressed a vision for a stable Middle East, stating, “We want to help lay the foundations for a new order throughout the Middle East.” This order should enable Israelis, Palestinians, and their Arab neighbors to coexist in lasting peace, freedom, and security. He reiterated Germany’s commitment to a two-state solution, asserting that renewed peace negotiations are essential and should commence without delay.
Addressing the Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
In addition to discussing the West Bank, Merz called for progress in the ongoing peace process concerning Gaza. He noted the recent stabilization of the ceasefire, which has lasted for two months, and acknowledged the need to advance to the next phase of humanitarian assistance.
“We share the relief that the ceasefire in Gaza has now stabilized for two months. But now we must also succeed in entering the second phase,” Merz said. He stressed the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis faced by civilians in Gaza, emphasizing that “more humanitarian aid is needed before winter.”
The Chancellor’s visit to Aqaba was part of a broader diplomatic effort. Following his meeting with King Abdullah II, he proceeded to Israel, where he met with Israeli President Izchak Herzog in West Jerusalem. Merz is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu on October 8, 2023, to further discuss these critical issues.
Merz’s diplomatic engagements underscore Germany’s role in advocating for peace and stability in the region, reinforcing its support for international efforts aimed at fostering dialogue and cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians.
