Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan visited Detroit Lakes on January 29, 2024, as part of her campaign for the U.S. Senate, where she addressed a gathering of community members at Bucks Mill Brewing. The event is part of Flanagan’s extensive campaign schedule, which includes 40 stops across 38 cities in Minnesota leading up to the precinct caucuses on February 3, 2024.
Flanagan, a member of the White Earth Nation, opened her remarks by sharing her Ojibwe name, which translates to “speaks in a loud and clear voice woman.” She emphasized her commitment to inclusivity, stating, “My family’s the Wolf Clan, and the role of our clan is to ensure that we’re never leaving anyone behind.” This sentiment underscored her campaign’s focus on community and support for all Minnesotans.
Addressing Community Concerns
During her speech, Flanagan acknowledged the challenges facing many families in Minnesota, including rising living costs and access to essential services. She shared her personal experiences growing up in St. Louis Park, where her family relied on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid. “I was that kid with a different colored lunch ticket,” she recalled, highlighting how these programs shaped her life and inspired her public service.
Flanagan’s visit came amid heightened concerns regarding the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota. Earlier that day, a video surfaced showing ICE agents detaining a man outside a restaurant in Detroit Lakes. Flanagan described these actions as “traumatic, dangerous, and unacceptable,” urging community members to unite in speaking out against such practices. “This is outrageous, and we have to speak up. We have to speak out,” she stated, stressing that this issue transcends political affiliation.
Campaign Promises and Community Engagement
Flanagan’s platform includes a commitment to grassroots campaigning, specifically declining corporate PAC money. “I am the only person in this race who is committed to not taking corporate PAC money,” she asserted, emphasizing her desire for accountability in government.
She also addressed a question about the ongoing scrutiny regarding fraud in Minnesota’s social service programs, acknowledging the anger of taxpayers over stolen funds. “Fraud is completely unacceptable,” Flanagan said, advocating for measures passed in the recent legislative session aimed at preventing fraud and enhancing oversight. She proposed the establishment of an independent Office of Inspector General and more robust FBI oversight to combat corruption effectively.
Encouraging active participation, Flanagan urged attendees to engage with their local precinct caucuses on February 3, stating, “If you are excited about what it is that we are building, if you are ready to push back, please join Team Peggy.” She emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping Minnesota’s future.
During her visit, Flanagan also highlighted the significance of know-your-rights trainings, particularly in light of recent immigration enforcement actions. She encouraged attendees to document interactions with federal agents and underscored the need for nonviolent protest, urging participants to prioritize safety, especially for marginalized groups.
As Flanagan continues her campaign across Minnesota, she aims to foster a sense of hope and action among voters, reinforcing her commitment to leaving no one behind.
