Community Mourns Loss of Genealogy Advocate John Patrick O’Connor

The genealogical community in Western Massachusetts is in mourning following the passing of John Patrick O’Connor on December 17, 2025. O’Connor, a dedicated volunteer at the Local History & Genealogy Library and Archives since the late 1980s, played a crucial role in assisting countless individuals in their search for family histories. His commitment to genealogy made him a beloved figure among both amateur and professional researchers.

O’Connor’s efforts helped guide many through the complex landscape of historical documents and genealogical publications. He was known for his ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, reflecting the mission of the Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History, which aims to preserve and share the history of the region’s varied population.

Throughout his tenure, O’Connor supported researchers of all ethnicities, races, and national origins. His engaging personality and sense of humor made visits to the library not only enlightening but enjoyable. Even after his retirement, he remained a resource for those seeking genealogical advice, continuing to correspond with individuals eager to explore their roots.

Joseph Carvalho III, a former president of the Springfield Museums and current editor of The Republican’s Heritage Book program, expressed the profound impact O’Connor had on the community. He stated, “John’s legacy lives on through the impressive volume of research conducted by the many people he helped discover their roots.”

O’Connor’s contributions are a testament to the vital role of volunteerism in preserving history and providing support to those on their genealogical journeys. His passing leaves a noticeable void in the community, as many remember him not just for his expertise but for the warmth and encouragement he offered.

The impact of his work extends beyond the walls of the library. Many individuals have expressed their gratitude for the guidance and support O’Connor provided over the years, noting how his assistance has been instrumental in uncovering family histories. His legacy is reflected in the stories of those he helped, creating a lasting connection to the past for many families in the region.

As the community reflects on O’Connor’s life and contributions, they are reminded of the importance of preserving history and supporting those who seek to understand their lineage. His dedication to genealogy has not only enriched individual lives but has also strengthened the community’s connection to its history.
