Community Mourns Loss of Advocate Gretchen Noah at 55

The community of Fargo, North Dakota, is grieving the loss of Gretchen Noah, a dedicated advocate for families dealing with Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS), who passed away at the age of 55. Her death on December 31, 2023, left a profound impact on those who knew her, particularly for her unwavering commitment to her family and others facing similar challenges.

Gretchen’s journey began in Bismarck, where she connected with other mothers while managing the demands of raising five children. Over the years, her focus shifted, but her dedication to her family and community remained steadfast. Her life took a significant turn when her only son, Markie, was diagnosed with SLOS, a rare genetic disorder that affects cholesterol production and leads to a range of developmental issues. This diagnosis ignited her passion for advocacy, and she became a prominent figure in the Smith-Lemli-Opitz Foundation, which supports families affected by the syndrome.

As the news of her passing spread, many reflected on her enduring spirit and the warmth she brought to those around her. Friends and family gathered for her funeral at Sts. Anne & Joachim Church in Fargo, where the sanctuary was adorned with festive decorations that Gretchen would have loved. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of gratitude and remembrance for a woman who dedicated her life to improving the lives of others.

During the service, her sister-in-law, Susan Noah, shared a reading from Wisdom 3:1-9, reminding attendees that “the souls of the righteous are in the hands of God.” This passage resonated with many, providing comfort in the face of loss. Father Luke, who led the service, spoke of Gretchen’s legacy and the impact she had on the lives of countless individuals, emphasizing that she is now in the company of saints.

The most poignant moment came when Markie, now a young man, sang “Ave Maria.” His performance served as a tribute to the love and sacrifices made by his mother throughout his life. As attendees knelt in reflection, many were reminded of the profound influence Gretchen had on their lives and the community at large.

In her fight for awareness and support for families dealing with SLOS, Gretchen Noah showcased an extraordinary ability to blend advocacy with motherhood. Her life was a testament to resilience and love, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who strive to make the world a better place for families facing similar challenges.

Gretchen’s mission extended beyond her immediate family, touching lives around the globe through her advocacy work. As the community mourns her passing, they also celebrate the indelible mark she left on their hearts and the countless lives she helped improve. Her spirit of love and service will undoubtedly live on in the memories of those she touched.

Rest in peace, Gretchen. Your mission was accomplished, and your legacy will endure.
