Activists Turn Berkeley Overpass into Vibrant Call for Peace

A group of activists in the Bay Area has transformed a busy overpass in Berkeley, California, into a vibrant weekly event advocating for peace and community engagement. The initiative, known as NICE, which stands for “Now It Counts Everyone,” features participants gathering on a pedestrian bridge above a freeway, dancing and waving signs as drivers honk in support.

Jennifer Quinn, an activist who initiated the event, expressed the sentiment behind this gathering, stating, “Every honk is somebody saying, ‘Yes, we agree.’ We are here to protect our democracy and our community, and this is just a really fun way to do that.” What began as a lighthearted Halloween costume gathering has since evolved into a movement that encourages community involvement and activism.

The weekly event, often referred to as the “overpass visibility dance party,” not only promotes nonviolence but also calls for reforms in immigration policy. Organizers perceive this initiative as a peaceful response to the increasing division and hostility in national politics. Sarah Donaldson, an attendee, highlighted the importance of maintaining a nonviolent approach, saying, “We got to be peaceful all the time. No violence.”

The atmosphere at NICE is designed to be uplifting and inclusive. Quinn noted that the lighthearted tone serves to alleviate the intensity often associated with political discourse. “It cuts through the intensity of some really intense politics,” she explained. “So, I say that I’m holding space for more nice people. You don’t have to agree with everything in the protests, but we need to show up and be counted.”

A Community-Centric Movement

For the organizers, the event is as much about fostering community as it is about activism. Participants are encouraged to engage with one another, making connections while standing up for shared values. Quinn emphasized that NICE is an invitation for everyone to join in, stating, “Now, everyone’s got to show up. Got to show up for community. And you can start here and make some friends.”

As the weekly dance parties continue to draw attention, they exemplify how grassroots movements can make a statement through creativity and joy. The gathering not only serves as a platform for activism but also cultivates a sense of belonging among participants, proving that community engagement can take many forms.

Through these gatherings, the activists hope to inspire others to take action and participate in the political process, reinforcing the idea that every voice matters. As they dance and celebrate together, the message remains clear: peace and unity are essential in the face of division.
