Students from Westerly Elementary School in Bay Village raised a total of $262.95 last spring to aid animals in need, showcasing the spirit of community service. The school’s Girls on the Run team, comprised of third- and fourth-grade students, organized various fundraising activities, including the sale of lemonade, brownies, and bracelets, to contribute to the Friendship Animal Protective League located in Elyria.
Empowering Young Girls Through Community Service
“Girls on the Run is a national initiative with a chapter in Northeast Ohio, focusing on teaching essential life skills, teamwork, and friendship while promoting physical activity,” explained Abbey Gleason, a teacher and the site lead for the program. Each season culminates in a 5K run, reinforcing the importance of fitness alongside community involvement.
Gleason highlighted that the program teaches participants to tackle challenges, make positive decisions, and care for themselves and others. “It’s not about being the fastest; it’s about moving your body, building confidence, and understanding how giving back can benefit both the giver and the receiver,” she added.
The Westerly team has been active intermittently over several years, with Gleason stepping into the role of site lead last year when her daughter joined the team. “We had several girls return this year because they enjoyed the program so much,” she noted. The combination of fitness and community service has created a fulfilling experience for participants.
Recognizing the Impact of Young Philanthropists
Following the donation, the Friendship Animal Protective League sent a letter expressing gratitude towards the team for their generous contribution. Gleason remarked on the excitement among the girls upon receiving recognition for their hard work. “They were thrilled to know they made a difference,” she stated. “This experience demonstrated to them that small actions can positively impact others and that teamwork truly makes a difference.”
The initiative not only emphasizes fitness but also fosters a sense of responsibility and empathy within the young participants. As they continue to engage in community service, the Girls on the Run team at Westerly Elementary School exemplifies how children can contribute to meaningful causes while developing important life skills.
