The City of Watervliet recently hosted a remembrance ceremony to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The event took place at the Watervliet-Colonie Elks Lodge, bringing together community members to reflect on the significance of that tragic day.
Albany County District Attorney Lee Kindlon initiated the ceremony with opening remarks, setting a tone of remembrance and respect. The guest speaker, Col. Jason Schultz, Commander of the Watervliet Arsenal, shared insights about the impact of 9/11 on national security and community resilience. His words resonated with the audience as they remembered the lives lost and the changes that followed.
Watervliet’s Mayor Charles Patricelli delivered the closing remarks, emphasizing the importance of unity and remembrance in the face of adversity. The ceremony featured musical tributes, including renditions of the National Anthem and “God Bless America” by Rafi Topalian. The solemn note of Taps was performed by Tom MacDonald, adding a poignant touch to the proceedings.
The ceremony also included an opening prayer by Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, who provided a moment of reflection for attendees. Watervliet High School senior Fiona Cheng recited the Pledge of Allegiance, engaging the younger generation in the remembrance.
Community leaders actively participated in the event. Exalted Ruler James McGovern and state Senator Jake Ashby delivered remarks that highlighted the enduring spirit of the community and the nation. The Watervliet Police Department presented the colors, signifying respect and honor for the sacrifices made by first responders.
A significant part of the ceremony was the Tolling of the Bells, conducted by both the Watervliet Fire Department and the Watervliet Arsenal Fire Department. This act served as a powerful reminder of the lives lost during the tragic events of 9/11, creating a moment of silence for reflection.
