Lt. Col. Robert Ryan Olea, a distinguished veteran and aviator, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, at the age of 94 in Chico, California. Olea’s life was marked by his dedication to aviation and service to his country, which spanned several decades and numerous accomplishments.
Born on January 10, 1931, Olea’s passion for flight began early and remained a defining feature of his life. He proudly served in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, where he honed his skills as a pilot. His military career was complemented by over 20 years of service with the Civil Air Patrol, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and earned the designation of Command Pilot.
Throughout his career, Olea made significant contributions to aviation beyond his military service. He held a position as Vice President at Shinn Engineering before founding Olea International, a company specializing in airline and military products. He led this organization for 23 years, demonstrating both entrepreneurial spirit and leadership.
Olea’s love for aviation extended into his personal life, where he actively shared his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. His commitment to the community was evident through his involvement in various initiatives aimed at fostering interest in aviation among young people.
His faith also played a central role in his life. Olea was a devoted member of Bidwell Presbyterian Church, where he found a supportive community. He was married to the late Jeanne (Morgan) Olea for 50 years, having tied the knot on August 4, 1974, in Newport Beach, California. Together, they raised two sons, Steve and Wayne Olea, who survive him.
A memorial service honoring Olea’s life and achievements will be held at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home on November 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends will gather to celebrate a man whose life was a testament to dedication, faith, and service. In remembrance, attendees will reflect on the words from Isaiah 40:31: “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Robert Ryan Olea leaves behind a legacy of service, commitment, and a passion for aviation that will inspire future generations. His contributions to both the military and civilian aviation sectors will not be forgotten.
