The United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona is actively recruiting volunteers for its annual VITA program, which provides free tax assistance to eligible residents. This initiative supports Arizonans with household incomes up to $79,000, offering assistance with both state and federal tax preparation and filing. Last year, the VITA program helped approximately 14,000 households, resulting in a total of $16 million in tax returns for the community.
Volunteer Opportunities and Training
Organizers emphasize the importance of volunteer involvement in this initiative. According to Gina Nickerson, Senior Director at United Way, tax regulations can change annually, which makes training essential. To prepare volunteers, the organization conducts an IRS-sponsored training session to equip them with the knowledge needed to assist taxpayers effectively.
“It truly is an intimidating process for most taxpayers, and so we try to alleviate that intimidation and stress,” Nickerson stated. “We’re ready to help them in any situation. Every year, there are tax changes that we have to deal with on both a federal and state level.”
In addition to tax preparation, there are numerous roles available for those who may not be comfortable with numbers. United Way representatives indicate a need for volunteers to assist with administrative tasks, site management, and even Spanish translation services.
How to Get Involved
Individuals interested in volunteering for the VITA program can find more information on the United Way’s website.
