Temi Coker, a Nigerian-American multidisciplinary artist, has launched a home collection inspired by his Nigerian heritage, now available at Walmart. The collection aims to create heirlooms that celebrate cultural identity and belonging. Coker, who was born in Lagos and currently resides in Dallas, emphasizes the importance of crafting pieces that reflect the dual heritage of his own children, blending African and African American influences.
The collection includes a variety of home decor items such as vases, pillows, throws, and rugs, with prices ranging from less than $13 to $320. Coker expressed that the living room is often the heart of family memories, stating, “I designed these pieces to live in that sacred space and be accessible to every family.”
Design Inspired by Cultural Heritage
Coker’s designs feature textured vases that echo the intricate patterns of braids and hairstyles significant to Black culture. He states these pieces are not only decorative but also serve as vessels that carry “memory, tradition, and culture into tomorrow.” Several of the vases are made using 3D printing technology in the U.S., allowing for adjustments and refinements to achieve his vision.
The vibrant colors and patterns in the collection—grass green, teal blue, warm red, and black—are reflective of the lively culture of Nigeria. Coker notes that these designs resonate with modern American households, where diverse families are establishing their own traditions while honoring their roots.
Partnership with Walmart
Coker’s collaboration with Walmart aims to make these culturally rich pieces accessible to families of all budgets. He remarked, “This isn’t luxury for the few, but legacy made accessible to all.” Reflecting on his personal connection with Walmart, Coker shared, “My first pair of shoes were from Walmart, and so many people in my community shop there—so being able to launch my first home collection with them is extremely special.”
According to Walmart, the collection is part of their ongoing commitment to partner with diverse creators. The company aims to provide customers with designs that reflect their communities and to make beautifully crafted home decor affordable for families.
Creighton Kiper, Senior Vice President of Home at Walmart U.S., stated, “We’re on a journey to democratize style, and our new Temi Coker collection is an exciting opportunity to bring his authentic perspective and bold, beautiful designs exclusively to Walmart customers.”
Coker is recognized for his vibrant, Afrofuturist-inspired work that celebrates Black culture and contemporary identity. His distinctive style, characterized by bold colors and geometric patterns, has garnered attention from notable clients including Google, Netflix, and The New York Times. His achievements have been acknowledged by various organizations, such as the Type Directors Club and the Society of Illustrators.
Coker’s collection is now available online, making it easier for families to incorporate pieces that tell a story of cultural heritage and personal significance into their homes.
