T. Kingfisher’s Saints of Steel Series Expands with New Novels

The conclusion of T. Kingfisher’s latest installment in the *Saints of Steel* series marks a pivotal moment for fans and readers. The author has confirmed plans for additional novels, promising at least three more adventures centered on the seven paladins, with the potential for a crossover that addresses the unresolved mystery surrounding the Saint’s murder. This ongoing narrative invites readers to engage with complex themes woven through an entertaining narrative.

In *Paladin’s Faith*, a critical discussion unfolds between Lady Silver and Shane regarding the circumstances of the Saint of Steel’s death. Lady Silver asserts that the Saint was murdered and challenges the notion that a natural death could lead to the profound trauma experienced by the followers. She states, “There are stories of heroes with weapons that could slay a god, but that sends a shockwave around the earth, and this did not” (p. 188). This sentiment reveals the deep instability left in the wake of the Saint’s demise, as noted by Silver’s reference to their god of the year, Second Waking, who shielded her people from the worst consequences, despite the year being described as particularly difficult.

The narrative hints at larger implications for the supernatural world, as Lady Silver entrusts Shane with a list of libraries where the paladins might uncover truths about their god’s assassination. In a contemplative exchange with Wren, Shane questions the role of humans in avenging a god. Their dialogue captures a central theme of the series: “Do we need to do anything? Isn’t this all…I don’t know…god stuff?” Wren’s hesitant response underscores the moral ambiguity surrounding their quest. “Are humans supposed to avenge gods? That seems like something a priest would know better than I would,” she concludes (p. 191).

The future novels are expected to follow the paladins on perilous journeys, likened to “Library Road Trips,” as they seek answers amid potential dangers. The significance of the Saint’s murder occurring on the summer solstice is anticipated to play a crucial role in the unfolding story.

Kingfisher’s exploration of deep history in this world is compelling, particularly in light of her background in anthropology. The author examines cultures that exist amidst the remnants of ancient empires, raising questions about the interplay between setting and plot. The existence of magic in the past, evidenced by the Vagrant Hills and its myriad creatures, adds layers of intrigue. As Kingfisher reveals, “We know that in the deep past there was a culture that used magic — serious magic” capable of remarkable feats, including binding souls and crafting Wonder Engines.

The narrative also delves into the nature of demons, who inhabit a hell from which they seek escape. The complex portrayal of these entities raises questions about their motivations and the implications of their existence. Wisdom, a demon with aspirations of godhood, presents a contrasting perspective, stating that, unlike humans, demons can continue to grow in power and understanding. “Give me enough worshippers, give me the power of their faith, and I will be what even a paladin would consider a god” (pp. 400-401). This notion challenges conventional views on morality and divinity within the series.

As the paladins grapple with their identities and loyalties, Shane articulates a poignant reflection on their relationship with the Temple of the White Rat: “We owe them. For the living and the dead” (p. 48). This acknowledgment of past support from the temple emphasizes the emotional weight of their quest for vengeance and understanding.

Overall, the *Saints of Steel* series continues to captivate readers with its blend of adventure, moral complexity, and rich world-building. With multiple novels on the horizon, fans eagerly anticipate how T. Kingfisher will unravel the layers of mystery and conflict that define this engaging narrative.
