Syracuse Football Welcomes Top Recruit Calvin Russell for 2024

Syracuse University has secured one of its most significant football recruits in two decades with the signing of Calvin Russell. The four-star recruit, who committed to the Orange on Thursday night, is the highest-ranked player to join the program since Cecil Howard in 2001. Russell, a wide receiver from Miami Northwestern, is not only recognized as a four-star recruit by the 247Sports composite rankings but also holds a five-star rating on the site, where he is ranked as the No. 23 recruit nationally.

The signing of Russell marks a notable achievement for head coach Fran Brown, who has now secured the best high school recruiting class for Syracuse in the past 20 years. This year’s class ranks No. 30 nationally according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Russell’s impressive high school season included 32 receptions for 517 yards and seven touchdowns, contributing to Miami Northwestern’s undefeated record.

Notable Recruits from the Past Two Decades

Russell joins a select group of elite recruits who have donned the Orange jersey over the last two decades. Below is a summary of the top recruits Syracuse has signed, highlighting their accomplishments and contributions to the program.

– **Lavar Lobdell, WR, No. 152 in 2025**: A standout from Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, Lobdell was part of a legendary team that secured three state championships. Although he faced challenges during his college career, he remains a notable figure in Syracuse football history.

– **Averin Collier, RB, No. 218 in 2008**: Collier was the top player in New York at the time but faced obstacles, including a significant injury that led to academic issues. He managed to play only one season, carrying the ball 12 times for 82 yards.

– **Demetres Samuel Jr., CB, No. 244 in 2025**: The highest-ranked defensive player on this list, Samuel made a significant impact during his high school career and was a key recruit for Brown in the Class of 2025. His performance placed him among the team leaders in defensive snaps and passes defended in the ACC.

– **Emanuel Ross, WR, No. 265 in 2024**: Ross was a highly regarded recruit who committed to Syracuse after changing his mind from Stanford. He faced injury challenges during his first two years but contributed with 10 receptions for 110 yards as a redshirt freshman.

– **Marcus Sales, WR, No. 300 in 2008**: A product of CBA, Sales had a successful college career, finishing with 16 receiving touchdowns, tying him for seventh on Syracuse’s all-time list.

The list of top recruits also includes players like Tommy DeVito, a quarterback who later transitioned to the NFL, and Mikel Jones, a linebacker recognized for his leadership and performance during his time at Syracuse.

Looking Ahead to Future Seasons

With Russell’s commitment, the future of Syracuse football looks promising. His potential partnership with fellow recruits like Amare Gough and Tedarius Hughes could enhance the Orange’s offensive capabilities, especially if they maintain their development and commitment.

As Syracuse prepares for the upcoming season, the coaching staff, led by Brown, remains focused on building a competitive team. Russell’s addition not only elevates the program’s recruiting status but also signals a renewed commitment to excellence on the field. The Orange’s recruitment strategy, which has garnered eight of the top 20 recruits in the past three years, shows a clear direction aimed at revitalizing the program.

In summary, the signing of Calvin Russell represents a significant milestone for Syracuse football. With his talent and the support of a strong recruiting class, the Orange are poised for an exciting season ahead.
