On September 14, 2024, Staten Island will host the Out of the Darkness Community Walk, an event dedicated to raising awareness for suicide prevention. The walk, organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention New York City Chapter (AFSP NYC), aims to address the pressing issue of suicide, which is a leading cause of death in the United States and the second leading cause for individuals aged 15 to 34 in New York.
The event is set to begin at 12 p.m. ET at Wolfe’s Pond Park. Community members are encouraged to participate in the walk to honor the memory of lost loved ones, support those currently struggling, or to acknowledge their own experiences with mental health challenges. “The Staten Island Walk creates a safe space for unconditional support, honest conversations, fostering hope and understanding in our local community,” stated Felicia Gambino, co-chair of the Staten Island Walk.
Community Impact and Support
Proceeds from the event will directly benefit AFSP’s initiatives, including research, education, advocacy, and support services for those affected by suicide. According to AFSP, suicide impacts approximately one in five families in the United States, highlighting the importance of community engagement and awareness.
This year, the Staten Island walk is part of a larger national effort, with hundreds of similar events taking place across the country. Participants will have the opportunity to hear remarks from AFSP NYC staff and walk chairs, as well as take part in a special Honor Beads Ceremony that recognizes individuals and their personal connections to the cause.
Local sponsors playing a crucial role in supporting the walk include Hands of Hope, Richmond University Medical Center, UrgentVet Staten Island, and Richmond Behavioral Associates. Additionally, in-kind contributions from DJ Ricardo Phillips and Starbucks will enhance the event experience.
