The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) celebrated the opening of a new athletic facility and police annex at the Davis-Edwards-Harris Education Complex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday. This state-of-the-art facility boasts a turf football field that accommodates football, soccer, and lacrosse, as well as an eight-lane track designed for various athletic events.
The new complex, situated on seven acres, features seating for 3,000 spectators and a 16,000-square-foot police annex intended to enhance campus security and foster community collaboration. The facility represents a significant investment in local education and athletics, aiming to provide students with an environment conducive to both physical education and personal safety.
John Sanders, the senior director of health, physical education, and fitness at SCCPSS, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This has been a journey for the kids and staff over at Groves, who have used temporary homes. It’s very exciting that they will now have their own stadium to play their home games in.”
The first event at the new stadium will take place on September 12, 2025, when Groves High School hosts Islands High School at 19:30. This inaugural game marks a new chapter for Groves’ athletic programs, which have long awaited a dedicated venue.
As communities increasingly recognize the importance of investing in educational facilities, the opening of the new stadium illustrates a commitment to enhancing student experiences in Savannah. The enhancements to the complex not only provide a platform for athletic achievements but also aim to strengthen the relationship between schools and law enforcement through the police annex.
Overall, the new athletic facility represents a major advancement for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, setting a precedent for future developments in educational infrastructure.
