The San Diego County Treasurer’s Office has announced that the deadline for a significant property tax auction is set for March 5, 2024. This auction features a total of 686 properties that have remained in tax default for five years or more, offering potential buyers a unique opportunity to acquire real estate in the region.
Larry Cohen, the San Diego County Treasurer, emphasized the county’s efforts to reach out to property owners who may be at risk of losing their properties. “We make every effort to reach defaulted property owners so they can keep their properties,” Cohen stated. He added that the county is mandated by the California Revenue & Taxation Code to proceed with the sale of properties that have been in default for the specified duration.
Cohen expressed optimism about the upcoming auction, stating, “This year we have hundreds of properties that might be the perfect opportunity for a hopeful buyer.” The auction will utilize an online system, allowing participants to research and bid on a diverse range of properties throughout San Diego County.
Online Auction Details
The online auction is scheduled to take place from March 13 to March 18, 2024. Interested bidders must register on the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s auction website before the deadline on March 5. Registration requires a refundable $1,000 deposit and a non-refundable $35 processing fee, which may vary for certain parcels.
Should all properties sell for the minimum bid, the county could potentially generate $18.2 million in tax revenue. This year’s auction includes a variety of offerings:
– 70 improved properties
– 66 unimproved properties
– 550 timeshares
County officials have advised that all sales will be final. They encourage prospective buyers to thoroughly research the auction process, which can be found on the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s website.
Important Reminders for Bidders
For those at risk of losing their properties, the auction can be avoided by settling all outstanding taxes and fees by 5 p.m. on March 12, 2024. Officials noted that every effort is made to notify property owners about the impending sales prior to the auction.
Residents who wish to receive deadline reminders via email can sign up for notifications through the county’s website.
