The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is set to host a gun safety event aimed at reducing the number of unwanted firearms in the community. Scheduled for August 23, 2023, the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the La Mesa Civic Center, located at 4825 Date Avenue. This initiative involves collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, including the La Mesa Police Department and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.
Participants can turn in unwanted firearms anonymously, receiving a $100 gift card for each handgun, rifle, or shotgun surrendered. Those handing in assault weapons will be offered a $200 gift card. The Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that no questions will be asked, ensuring the anonymity of all participants.
In addition to facilitating the safe turn-in of firearms, the event will offer free cable locks while supplies last, promoting safe storage practices. Individuals are instructed to place their unloaded firearms in the trunk of their vehicles and await guidance from a deputy or officer upon arrival. All firearms collected during the event will be destroyed, underscoring the commitment to enhancing community safety.
This initiative reflects a broader effort by local law enforcement agencies to address gun violence and encourage responsible gun ownership. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, along with other participating agencies, hopes to attract a significant turnout, contributing to a safer environment for residents.
Community members interested in participating are encouraged to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of unwanted firearms safely.
