Remembering Ronald A. Whitenack: A Life of Dedication and Passion

Ronald Aubrey Whitenack, a dedicated educator and passionate cycling enthusiast, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, at the age of 78 in Newport News, Virginia. Born on February 27, 1947, in Norfolk, Virginia, he was the son of the late Aubrey Herman Whitenack, Jr. and Lucy Virginia Mills Whitenack.

After completing his education at Princess Anne High School, Whitenack enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Vietnam War. His commitment to learning led him to pursue higher education at the College of William & Mary, where he earned both a Bachelor and a Master of Arts in English. Following his studies, he dedicated nearly three decades to teaching English at Menchville and Warwick High Schools in Newport News.

A Multifaceted Career and Passion for Cycling

In addition to his role as a high school teacher, Whitenack served as an Assistant Professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He taught Technical Writing and Speech classes at the Worldwide Campuses located at Ft. Eustis and Langley Air Force Bases for 18 years. During his time as an educator, he was known for his dedication and the thousands of miles he logged commuting by bicycle, a testament to his passion for cycling.

Whitenack earned recognition as an icon in the Newport News and Hampton Roads area, affectionately known as the “Bike Rider” or “Teacher Man.” His competitive spirit shone through in his cycling career, where he was celebrated nationally within the USA Cycling Organization as “Baby Vet.” He captured numerous titles in the District of Columbia and Virginia State Championships, showcasing his exceptional talent and commitment to the sport.

Beyond cycling, Whitenack had a profound love for the ocean, which drew him to kayak and surf ski racing. His talents extended to music as well; he was an accomplished pianist, having studied from a young age and reigniting his passion for the instrument at the age of 62. Friends and family often found him immersed in the joy of playing piano for hours on end.

A Legacy of Love and Gratitude

Ronald A. Whitenack is survived by his wife of 32 years, Betty R. Whitenack, along with his stepson Robert Cameron Holland IV and his wife Laura, his step-grandson Matthew Lynch Holland, and his brother James D. Whitenack and wife Jennifer. His nieces, Claire and Eleanor Whitenack, as well as great-nephews Chase and Sawyer Marden, also cherished their time with him.

The family expressed their deep gratitude for the exceptional care and kindness provided by his caregivers over the past five years, particularly Tania Jacobson, Nikki Dame, Lisa Fragala, Lisa Machamer, Brenda Deuell, and Dr. Teresa McConaughy.

A Celebration of Life honoring Ronald A. Whitenack will be scheduled at a later date. The community remembers him as a man who lived with passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.
