Remembering Richard Midlam: A Legacy of Education and Community

Richard James Midlam, a respected educator and community advocate from Oneida, New York, passed away on December 9, 2025, at the age of 78. His contributions to education and local programs have left an enduring impact on the community.

Born on May 4, 1947, in Rome, New York, Richard was the son of the late Harold R. and Jane (Trembeth) Midlam. He pursued higher education, earning his BA from SUNY Oneonta and his MA from Syracuse University. Richard dedicated his career to teaching, beginning with a three-year stint in the Schenectady School District, where he taught mathematics at Steinmetz Junior High. He later spent nearly three decades with the Oneida School District, where he taught various grades, including 6th grade at Seneca and North Broad St. Schools, and 2nd grade at Oneida Castle Elementary School.

Richard’s influence extended beyond the classroom. He was deeply involved with the Madison County Children’s Camp Lookout for a decade, where he developed and managed the nature and waterfront programs. His wife, Barbara Pellettier, ran the Arts and Crafts program until her passing on March 27, 2009. Richard also contributed to youth sports, coaching AYSO soccer for multiple age groups and overseeing girls’ soccer at Oneida Middle School for twelve years.

Upon retiring from North Broad St. School, Richard continued to serve the community through his work with the Madison-Cortland ARC, ultimately becoming the Director of Family Support for Madison and Cortland Counties. He was instrumental in helping residents at the Maxwell House recover from alcohol addiction.

Richard was a past president of the Oneida Kiwanis Club and played a significant role in establishing the Oneida City Youth Program. His hobbies included wildlife wood carving and amateur nature photography. He also authored several children’s books in collaboration with his friend and artist, Susan E. LaRochelle.

He is survived by his two children and their spouses, Bryan (Julia) Midlam and Kara (Jason) Knott, alongside five grandchildren: twins Hudson, Hadley, and Audrey Midlam, and Leo and Ruby Knott. Richard also leaves behind one brother, Donald (Jacquie) Midlam, five nieces and nephews, and nine great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, his parents, and his brother, Robert H. Midlam, along with his sister-in-law, Joyce Wick Midlam.
