Remembering Mary Ann Phibbs: A Life of Service and Achievement

Mary Ann Phibbs, a dedicated community member and passionate gardener, passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 89 in the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital. Born on June 27, 1936, in Schenectady, New York, she was the daughter of the late John Xavier and Agnes Smith Phibbs. She is survived by her wife of 45 years, Marilyn MacBride, along with cherished nieces Kathleen Phibbs Brown of Scotia, NY, and Elizabeth Phibbs Roff (Edward) of Stony Point, NY.

Mary Ann’s educational journey began at Mount Pleasant High School in Schenectady, where she developed a strong foundation for her future achievements. She later earned her Bachelor’s Degree from The College of Saint Rose while balancing full-time employment. For over 40 years, she worked at the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, rising from the steno pool to become the Manager of Personnel.

Achievements in Golf and Gardening

An avid golfer, Mary Ann made history as the first woman to achieve a hole-in-one at the Stadium Golf Course. She claimed the title of club champion twice at the Stadium Country Club and excelled in Member Guest Tournaments at various golf clubs. Her passion for the sport was matched only by her love for gardening. For two decades, she volunteered as an Albany County Master Gardener, earning Emeritus Status for her dedication. Mary Ann shared her gardening expertise with the public, maintained community gardens, and participated in Garden Education Day for many years.

In addition to her gardening efforts, Mary Ann was deeply committed to social causes. She served as vice president of Our Brothers Keepers, an organization dedicated to raising funds for those affected by AIDS. Her contributions to the community reflected her compassionate nature and desire to make a positive impact.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects to Mary Ann’s family on November 24, 2025, from 15:00 to 18:00 at McVeigh Funeral Home, located at 208 North Allen Street, Albany, NY 12206.
