Remembering Carolyn Whitmire: A Life of Service and Passion

Carolyn Whitmire, a beloved educator and community advocate, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, at the age of 83. Surrounded by her family in the early hours of the morning, Carolyn’s life was marked by her passion for education, her commitment to equality, and her deep love for family and friends.

Born Carolyn Foutz on January 10, 1942, in Ukiah, California, she grew up in a close-knit family with parents Joe and Stella, alongside her sister Joan and brother Calvert. Both Carolyn and Joan were charter members of the Dolphins swim club, where they developed a love for competitive swimming, participating on the Ukiah High swim team.

After earning her degree from Humboldt State University, Carolyn married Fred Whitmire, and the couple established their home in Eureka. There, she dedicated much of her career to Eureka City Schools, where she was known for her unwavering commitment to helping every student realize their potential. Whether working with gifted students or those in resource education programs, Carolyn’s impact on education was profound.

Beyond her professional achievements, Carolyn was recognized for her vibrant personality. She was deeply curious about other cultures and maintained an open-hearted approach to life. Known for her generosity, she often went out of her way to help others, embodying the spirit of community service.

Throughout her life, Carolyn was unyielding in her advocacy for racial equality, often standing up for what was right during challenging times. Her bravery and determination left a lasting impression on those around her, inspiring many to join her in the fight for social justice.

In addition to her educational and advocacy efforts, Carolyn had a range of personal interests. She was a private pilot and an accomplished horsewoman, training dogs for agility competitions. Her entertaining skills were equally impressive; she regularly hosted large gatherings for Fred’s colleagues and supporters at both College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Fred Whitmire, along with her children, Deborah Davids (married to Peter) and Phillip Whitmire (married to Anna). She was also a cherished mother to Phillip Webb, who held a special place in her heart. Carolyn’s legacy continues through her grandchildren, Sebastian and Nathaniel Whitmire, who will remember her warmth and kindness.

Graveside services for Carolyn will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Russian River Cemetery District, located at 940 Low Gap Road, Ukiah, CA 95482. Following the service, attendees are invited to a lunch at Left Coast Seafood Restaurant, situated at 110 W. Standley St. in Ukiah.

A second service will take place on Friday, August 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at First Covenant Church, located at 2526 J St. in Eureka. Refreshments will be available after the service, and all who wish to pay their respects are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Humboldt Spay/Neuter Clinic at 707.442.7729, located at 2606 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, CA 95501, or to Hospice of Mendocino at 707.456.3223, 100 Sanhedrin Circle, Willits, CA 95490.

Carolyn Whitmire’s legacy of service, kindness, and advocacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
