Former Quitman High School football star Fredrick O’Neal McRae is set to be inducted into the Jackson State University (JSU) Sports Hall of Fame on November 14, 2025. This honor recognizes his remarkable legacy as one of the best punters in the history of JSU football.
Born in Laurel, Mississippi, McRae is the son of Kathryn McRae Brooks and the grandson of the late James A. McRae and Bertha L. McRae. He showcased his talent at Quitman High School, where he received both All-District and All-State honors before joining the JSU team in 1987 as a true freshman.
Record-Setting Career at Jackson State
JSU Head Coach W.C. Gorden famously remarked, “We scoured the country looking for a good punter… Then right under our own noses, we find a gem in Mississippi.” That gem was McRae, who made history as the only true freshman to play for the Tigers that season. Over the course of four seasons, he earned both All-SWAC and All-American honors, while establishing records that remain unmatched today.
McRae set the JSU record for the most punts in a season with 87 and the most punting yards in a season, totaling 3,396 yards. His career statistics include 270 punts for 10,550 yards and top punting averages of 41.8 yards in 1988 and 41.2 yards in 1990. His final game, the 1990 Soul Bowl, highlighted his skill, as he averaged 43 yards over seven punts.
In recognition of his exceptional performance, McRae was selected for the JSU All-Century Team in 2011. His contributions extended beyond the football field; he has dedicated decades to mentoring youth, officiating games, and actively serving his community.
A Lifelong Commitment to Education and Community
In 2024, McRae achieved a significant milestone by completing his bachelor’s degree at Jackson State University, a goal he had pursued for many years. He continues to work at Masonite Corporation, where he has been employed since 2004.
The upcoming induction ceremony not only honors McRae’s athletic achievements but also celebrates his lasting impact on the community, both as a mentor and as an advocate for education. His journey from Quitman to the JSU Hall of Fame serves as an inspiring testament to his dedication and perseverance.
As the date approaches, the JSU community looks forward to commemorating McRae’s outstanding contributions to sports and society.
